Quentin Tarantino's version of Star Trek will head in a direction where no previous film in the franchise has been before. It is now being reported that the upcoming Paramount Pictures film will be R-rated and those under 17 will get to watch it only with an accompanying parent or adult guardian.

The next Star Trek film's script will be penned by either Mark L Smith, Lindsey Beer or Drew Pearce, with Tarantino serving as the director.

There have been 13 films in the franchise so far after the series began with 1979's Star Trek and, most recently, included a rebooted trilogy by JJ Abrams.

The latest film, Star Trek Beyond released last year, went on to earn over $340 million in global box office collections.
