Heroines doing special songs have become very common these days, but rarely do we see an actress doing a character role being part of such a song. Sharmiela Mandre, who is playing a journalist in her upcoming film Mass Leader starring Shivarajkumar, is part of a special song, too.

When Sharmiela was offered this role, the first question she asked the producers was why this song was necessary. “I have done films where I fall in love or my character moves the movie’s story forward. I asked what is special about playing this role, where I have to do a special number,” says the actress. “The director Narasimha then asked me to listen to the entire story and, after listening to it, I decided to take up this offer. I learnt that my role in pivotal in the film, also getting to play an undercover journalist was very interesting,” she says.

“In fact, when we started, this special song was not planned,” she says. “Initially they planned to bring in a heroine to do the song, then they decided to tweek my character to fit into the song and I thought it was a brilliant idea. Joining me in the song will also be Shivarajkumar and Vijay Raghavendra, among few other artistes, and the situation in the song takes the movie forward to its climax.”

Her recently released Aake saw her as a protagonist, and she didn’t mind being part of an ensemble star cast in Mass Leader. “I don’t always look for movies that centres around the role I play,” she says. “I decide on playing a character based on the overall subject. I am happy if I can make an impact even if I have only limited screen time,” she says.

While she decided to do this special song because it was essential for the story, Sharmiela makes it clear that she is not open to doing these songs just for the heck of it. “I need to know why exactly I need to do the song,” she says. “Even if I am offered a song with a top star, I wouldn’t do it only for that. In fact, I have been made such offers before but I rejected them. I love dancing and it is a passion. I love item songs and there is always one playing in my head while I am driving. But I must be given a reason for doing that song.”

The actress meanwhile is figuring out what her next project should be, and is currently reading a few scripts.
