Mysteries of the Force

It has been 40 years since the first Star Wars film came out and with the eighth installment releasing this weekend, we take a look at the film’s five biggest characters, and the intriguing theories surrounding their roles in this film.

Rey

The protagonist of the new trilogy shares every trait with the protagonists of the two previous trilogies — Anakin and Luke Skywalker. She grows up on a desert planet that she hates (Tatooine), she pilots the Millenium Falcon on her first try, she doesn’t know her real parents and she uses the Force knowingly and unknowingly without training. While all of this screams that she is a Skywalker, it would be too obvious. So, it’s also likely that she is the granddaughter of Obi Wan Kenobi, Anakin/Darth Vader’s master. But with Jedi having a strict celibacy rule, this could be in doubt, and would also challenge the uniqueness of Darth Vader. So who indeed is Rey? This is perhaps the biggest question the new film will answer.

Luke Skywalker

A Star Wars film without a Skywalker is unimaginable, but the name, The Last Jedi, teases enough. Luke even says in the teaser that it is time for the Jedi to end. After the events of The Return of the Jedi, Luke started a Jedi training Academy which went south when Kylo Ren, and some students aligned with him, rebelled and destroyed it. At the end of The Force Awakens, Rey finds Luke, who will likely train her in the new film, which will also explain more about his ominous pronouncement. Also, Luke went in search of the history of the Jedi; so expect to know more on that front, too. Theories suggest he might finally give in to the dark side fleetingly exhibited when he fought his father.

Finn

Finn, introduced to us as stormtropper FN-2187, rebelled against his masters, helped Rey, flew Millenium falcon and wielded the lightsaber, but was knocked cold at the end of the last film. With Finn able to understand the force much like Obi-Wan and Leia in the two previous trilogies, one wonders if the theories about him being from the lineage of Mace Windu are true. Or is there something more sinister at play?

Kylo Ren

Finding the mask of Darth Vader from the ashes at Endor, Kylo Ren wants to succeed where his grandfather failed. He wants to be the bad guy willingly, but doubts creep in. While many expect him to continue the dark path by killing Leia, theories say that the story will actually turn out to be a redemption arc and that he will bring some much-needed balance to the Force.

Snoke

The man who turned Kylo Ren to the dark side, no one actually knows who Lord Snoke is. Some wonder if he is Anakin Skywalker’s father or the near-immortal Dark Lord Darth Plagueis, who was supposed to be so powerful he could create life out of nothing by manipulating the midichlorians of the Force. Either way, he is the big villain of this new trilogy, and it is expected that more will be revealed on the history of Sith and if he is, indeed, the one who started it all.
