‘Kinavalli is my attempt to do something different'

Sugeeth of Shikkari Shambu and Madhura Naranga fame is back with his new film titled Kinavalli. Featuring a host of newcomers, the filmmaker describes it as a horror drama with twists and a touch of romance. The USP of the film is its tagline, 'Based on a fake story,' says the director.

"It's about events that follow a wedding anniversary surprise involving three friends. They are meeting after a long time and later converge at a house. Everyone working in this film, except me, are newcomers, in all departments. There is no particular reason why I thought of doing something like this. I just felt like doing something with newcomers. The script writers have worked as my assistant directors in the past. And actor Sujith Raj has worked in music videos and other stuff."

Given that horror and comedy are two of the most difficult genres in cinema, what made him choose this script? "Though people have labelled my earlier films comedy, I haven't done a full-fledged comedy yet. Kinavalli is a full-fledged comedy. It's my attempt to do something different from my usual fare. I don't want to be pigeonholed as a maker of comedies. I want to show people that I'm capable of doing other genres too. This was the impetus to do Kinavalli."

Sugeeth hopes people will approach his film with an open mind. "There is not much in this to dissect and analyse. This is a pakka entertainer. Don't go into it expecting everything to make sense. I hope everyone stops thinking about logic for two hours and appreciate it for what it is."

Now that he has done horror, Sugeeth is next planning to delve into the romance genre. "The discussions are still going on. Most likely I'll be both writing and directing. I hope to do something different with that too. I'm currently developing a project with Benny P Nayarambalam and if that takes time, then I'll do this one."
